WORKSHOP #1: Sat. May 31 - June 28
Saturday Afternoons: 1:30 - 5:30 p.m.
Cost: $180 plus model fee

Rather than emphasize the idea of portraiture, this workshop fouses on the head, neck, and shoulders as a study in form. The difference enables us to let go of the imperative to create a likeness and see what’s really there. The head is essentially a sphere. The effect of light creates volume. The handling of large shapes and big masses enable details to fall into place toward the end of the painting session. The surprise is that a likeness occurs more easily if you get the big stuff right. This workshop will feature a simple palette and working in monochrome. Initial poses will be 45 minutes in length and focus on visual language elements and getting it down quickly. These will serve as warm-ups for longer poses. There will be a six hour head study (two class sessions) as a final project. All skill levels welcome.

WORKSHOP #2: Sat. July 5 - August 2
Saturday Afternoons: 1:30 - 5:30 p.m.
Cost: $180 plus model fee

This workshop will follow many of the same principles as Workshop #1, but may be more suitable for those with more experience. We will be using a more sophisticated palette in this workshop. A full range of color will be used. We’ll be looking more closely at painting techniques, particularly building up a painting over three sessions. We’ll pay close attention to brushwork, edgework, and glazing. We’ll continue to do short, gestural poses of 45 min. durations as warm-ups, but will spend the final three sessions on one study with one model. We’ll continue to emphasize good proportions and composition, developing the painting as a whole..
