Art rocks.  Art rocks the very foundations of belief.  Art rocks the notions of form.  “This is a leg.” “Oh, really?”  I use art to see what is…not what I believe. Everyday I go into the studio, I explore this shape, this color, this sudden impulse. I notice the process of looking at something, the space between myself and the object, myself and the medium I am using. Often the end result is something identifiable but I continue to question this representation, “when did belief creep in?”  The process is fascinating and completely consuming.  I use different mediums, charcoal, paint, plaster, ink to help me explore the interface between the mind, the body and the world I am inhabiting. And then, the exploration continues outside the studio, not assuming that “I know” somebody or something.  Such joy.  Art rocks!

Currently I am in the process of opening a gallery at the Jupiter Hotel.  It will focus on emerging artists from Portland and beyond as well as emerging collectors.  While the emphasis will be on artists who are developing their unique point of view, it will not be constrained to any one style.  The first show opens February 3.  Come see.

Draw from a wide variety of Portland’s best art models, alternating on the hour, female-male throughout the day. Poses will be a fluctuating mix of shorter and longer poses. Looking for a challenge? Looking to find that “zone” that tends to happen when there is focused concentration over an extended period of time? Here it is! Bring snacks if you like. You may come and go throughout the day but please do so during the 10 minute break before each hour.

ScratchPDX is a collectively-run open stage that engages a cross-disciplinary community of artists, providing a monthly platform for people of all backgrounds and experience levels to share live performance.  ScratchPDX aims to promote artists, facilitate dialogue and collaboration, and deepen the understanding of the audience/performer relationship.

Now in it’s sixth season, ScratchPDX has been a proving ground and launching pad for many of Portland’s gifted performers.  The atmosphere is intimate and often electric.  Interaction between audience members and performers is encouraged during intermission and in the social time after the show.   This month’s show is on Saturday, February 11,  9:00  PM at Hipbone Studio (1847 East Burnside; doors open at 8:30).  Tickets are $10 and no act lasts longer than ten minutes. This workshop is suitable for everyone interested in exploring creativity, presence and being in-the-moment. We also like to laugh a lot and have a lot of fun! We will explore:

• developing moment to moment awareness and presence
• playing with the expressive possibilities of movement, sound and spoken word.
• improvising with structures that encourage authenticity and develop imagination
• collaborating with others through empathy.
• developing comfort communicating with an audience
•  working from a foundation of joy & alert relaxation in both life & art.

For anyone wanting more creativity. presence & spontaneity in their life.

Anet Ris-Kelman was Scott Kelman’s assistant for over 10 years, and currently teaches & performs in Portland & LA. She danced professionally in NYC with Daniel Nagrin’s improvisation group, ‘The Workgroup’, and in LA with the ‘Rudy Perez Performance Ensemble”, among others. Her video art poems won a national prize and have shown internationally. She has received grants from the City of LA for theater and video projects.
